Major Mariam al-Mansouri is a total badass

Look how badass she looks in those aviators!

But in all seriousness, Mariam al-Mansouri is an amazing individual. She's gained quite a bit of media attention in the West because not only is she the first female pilot in the United Arab Emirites Air Force, but she's been participating in the airstrikes the rest of the world has been hammering ISIS with in Northern Syria and Iraq. She's even led at least one of those airstrikes! She flies an F-16 Fighting Falcon too and was the first woman to enroll in the UAE Air Force Academy when women were finally allowed to join.

Now, it's worth pointing out that the UAE isn't exactly a pillar of equality for women. They rank number ten out of the twenty-two Arab nations in that regard, according to The Times of Israel. Still, maybe al-Mansouri can be an agent of change, an inspiration for women to demand equality and a catalyst for the culture there and elsewhere to change.
